Keystrokes - On-screen keyboard for Mac
OS 10 -
KeyStrokes is a soft keyboard that generates an image of a keyboard on the
Macintosh display those who cannot enter text using a hard keyboard. A mouse or
a mouse emulator is used to select and enter characters by pointing and clicking
on the keys. Operations that require simultaneous actuation of more than one key
are performed using the special sticky key feature
KeyStrokes. This allows command key and other modifier key-click combinations to
be performed. Characters are sent to any application running natively on OS 9,
OS 10 and into any application running in Classic Mode. KeyStrokes can be used
to access all areas of the Operating System except for logging in and entering
secure screen saver passwords.
Six resizable keyboard layouts are included. The layouts differ by whether they
include a number pad, function keys, navigation keys and ordering of the keys in
qwerty or alphabetical order. With the latest release a number pad keyboard has
been added. The simple keyboard layouts are suited for children or people with
limited cognitive ability. Key separation and other aspects of and keyboard
background appearance can be modified. The keyboards can be resized by selecting
several preset sizes or they can be drag sized like any window. All
international keyboards supported by the operating system are supported by
KeyStrokes.
KeyStrokes
provides advanced multilingual word prediction. The PolyPredix™ word
prediction engine does word completion, next word prediction and multi-word
prediction in languages that use the Roman and non-Roman character sets such as
Cyrillic. The PolyPredix™ prediction engine offers many time and effort saving
features that enhance user productivity. There is the capability to display one
line of text as it is being entered in the PolyPredix area (Typing Field) of the
KeyStrokes keyboard. This feature can minimize eye strain by reducing the
requirement to redirect one's gaze from the application to the keyboard and
back. KeyStrokes provides audio feedback to the user and in addition, it can
speak the characters entered in English. The capability to speak is only
available while running under Mac OSX.
Smart Transparency (available only on Mac OSX) can be used to automatically
"hide" the keyboard when it is not being used. If the mouse is moved outside of
the keyboard window it can be configured to fade from fully opaque to any level
of transparency. This will provide visual access to items under the keyboard
window when text entry is not underway. The final level of transparency, time to
fade and fade rate are all configured using KeyStrokes preferences
Dwellix is a utility for entering mouse button clicks for those who cannot
physically actuate a switch. The Dwellix utility can be accessed from the
keyboard toolbar and/or from the floating palette shown above. Dwellix monitors
the mouse pointer and after the pointer is motionless for a programmable time it
performs the selected button action, this is known as a dwell-click.
KeyStrokes provides audio feedback to the user and in addition, it can speak the
characters entered in English. The capability to speak is only available while
running under Mac OSX.

SwitchXS -
SwitchXS™ provides virtually complete access to Mac OS X and all
standard Mac applications for people who can only use a single switch. It offers
full mouse and keyboard emulation by what is known as “scanning”. The idea of
using a single switch and scanning to access a computer may be a little
confusing, but it is a simple concept. An image of a keyboard is presented on
the computer display. A single adaptive switch is clicked to begin scanning the
keyboard and in turn each row of keys is highlighted. Select a row by clicking
the switch when that row of keys is highlighted. Then each button in that row is
highlighted in sequence. When the button of interest is highlighted click the
switch and the function of that button is executed. For example, if a letter
button is selected, such as "B" that letter is sent to the active application.
If one of the mouse emulation buttons is selected, such as "mouse pointer up"
the pointer begins moving up. Click the switch again and the mouse pointer
stops.
SwitchXS provides a number of predefined scanning panels for
moving the cursor, and clicking and typing in all standard Mac applications. A
scanning panel can be thought of as a keyboard with additional buttons for mouse
emulation, menu scanning and managing the scanning process. SwitchXS also has
adjustable scanning speed and cycling, mouse speed, and keyboard transparency.
SmartTransparency™ makes the scanning panel partially or fully transparent when
not scanning and makes it possible to see “under” the keyboard between scans. A
very important feature of SwitchXS is that not only can the keyboard be scanned
but the application and system menus can be as well.
SwitchXS works with most USB joysticks, game pads, as well as
switch interfaces that emulate those devices. In addition, it can be used with a
regular keyboard as well as switch interfaces that emulate a keyboard. SwitchXS
supports multiple switches and user configurable scanning methods. SwitchXS is
currently localized for English and French. However, it works with most other
languages.
