Sentence Master Series LR1783
The Sentence Master is a revolutionary way to teach beginning reading developed by Dr. Marion Blank.
The Sentence Master guarantees success for children who are at risk of reading failure due to difficulties in phonics, oral language, and/or impulsive learning styles. It avoids the confusing rules of phonics and the complexity of whole language by focusing on the most frequently-used words of our language (i.e. "the" "is" "but," "and," etc.) Learning these "little words" gives students control over the majority of text they will encounter. The student spends 15-30 minutes working on the computer and writing activities that teach one word per day. After learning a set of 5 to 10 words, they read an animated story on the computer and then reads the same story on paper. All of the word activities and stories are designed so that children never see words that they have not fully mastered. Word Activities
One new word is taught each day with computer activities. These words appear later in stories.
Word Recognition Here, the student selects the word that matches the example at the top of the screen.
Sequential Recognition In this activity, the student selects all instances of a particular word in the order he or she would normally read them.
Spelling In a series of spelling activities that do not require letter naming, the student: • completes words by finding the missing letters on the screen • chooses letters from the screen to spell an entire word • types in the entire word
Sentence Completion Here, the student finds the missing word to complete a sentence.
Writing With these activities, students write, by hand or on the computer, the word just learned as well as whole sentences containing the new word and words that have already been taught. The Book Activities
Stories on the computer foster independent reading… with help always available After learning a set of words, the student is introduced to an animated story that contains only those words that have been mastered. First, the computer reads the story aloud and then the student reads it alone. Help is always available... at any time, the student can have a word or the entire page read aloud by the computer.
Story Booklets transfer the reader to print with ease. After working with the story on the computer, the student is introduced to a printed version of the same story. After reading it, the student completes sentences by filling in the blank spaces. These exercises are designed to strengthen both writing and comprehension skills.
Four Levels of Reading Instruction The Sentence Master is divided into four levels. At each level, the sentence structures and stories become progressively more complex. Once your students have successfully completed Level 1, you'll want to continue their progress with Levels 2, 3, and 4.
Each level includes:
- 40-70 new words
- 8 animated computer stories
- 8 Story Booklets with writing and comprehension exercises
